General practice, or general medicine, is a comprehensive area of medical care that focuses on the treatment of all types of conditions and diseases, similar to that of a family practice. Physicians who practice general medicine are known as general practitioners and usually provide primary care services. General practitioners not only provide treatment for existing conditions, but are also trained in the area of preventive care.
General practitioners are trained to treat a wide range of illnesses and diseases and are usually the point of first contact for a patient when they are unsure of their condition or are seeking initial medical care. In a sense, general practitioners act as the “gatekeepers” to the medical world, deciding when and for which conditions their patients will be referred to a specialist.
Many general practitioners who have not completed specialized fellowships in specialty areas pursue Certificates in Added Qualifications (CAQs), which allow the physician to earn credentials in areas such as geriatrics, sleep medicine, adolescent medicine or hospice & palliative medicine.
